Nutrition Program

This program is a partnership between City of Toronto, Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS) and TDSB.
The goal of a student nutrition program is to ensure that students who are at risk for poor nutritional intake have access to safe, adequate and nutritious food during the school day. Student nutrition programs provide nutritious meals and snacks to students to give them the nutrients and energy they need to be ready to learn. Every day, over 230,000 Toronto students participate in student nutrition programs.
All participants benefit from student nutrition programs, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Student nutrition programs work best when they are available to all students within a school community.
Each student nutrition program is unique and a reflection of its community. Programs are operated in schools and community sites by volunteers, parents and students. Student nutrition programs differ in:
-
Program Type (e.g., breakfast, morning meal, snack, lunch/dinner)
-
Budget
-
Number of days per week
-
Delivery (e.g., on-site preparation, catered, bin, buffet)
-
Equipment and facilities
-
Location (e.g., school or community agency)
Volunteers
Student nutrition programs are community based programs run by volunteers. Volunteers are an important part of making your program a success. Parents and students can contribute to the program in a variety of ways, including financial contributions, food preparation, fundraising, planning, etc.
At Owen Public School
We currently offer a morning snack. Based on guidelines of the program, each day students receive 2 out of 3 food groups (protein/dairy, fresh produce, grains).
